lithophanes were extremely popular in the 19th century. now largely forgotten, the process involved wax molding to produce porcelain casts which allowed beautiful details to be shown when light was placed within.
french porcelain manufacturer bernardaud produces a series of lithophanes- now marketed as 'votivelight candles'- which still fascinate.
note: the actual item is far less yellow than in the images. little detail is seen when unlit.
